The biography of the triangle
Why is this triangle named after him?
I knew about the fact that this theory takes roots from a transactic analysis created by Bern, but the idea of who the Carpman is tightly settled in my head. In the Russian-speaking Internet space, I did not find anything sensible and switched to English-speaking sources. The first link was the site with the unexpected name "Karpmandramatriangle" on which I immediately rushed to the section "Bioography" - biography.
The section presents three articles, one of which left me so not indifferent that I immediately began to translate it for Russian -speaking readers. In such cases, I gladly recall that I have 5 years of study in Inyaz, which included several years of written translation. And so ... "In an interview with Stephen Carpman." As far as I know, most of your life you lived in San Francisco, but where were you born?
My father was a psychoanalyst who worked in a psychiatric prison hospital. He was a Russian scientist sitting behind one student bench with Freud and was the founder of a new direction in criminal psychoanalysis. He wrote 20 books and articles. My mother was a social worker in the psychiatric department. She was a Spanish woman, and it was through communication with my mother that I became interested in Spanish culture.
I went to a medical school at the University of Duke, one of the three best. I have calmed down in the study of physics and discovered the talent for diagrams and other theories that led me to transactive analysis. At that time, I began to be interested in psychiatry, and when I met Eric Bern, everything came together. That is how I came to the idea of a triangle of relations. Initially, it was a sports diagram taken from American football or basketball.
I tried to apply this diagram with my clients. When I told Bern about her, he replied: "Describe her and people will quote you the next years." It was a great idea, but at that time people talked too much about who “from above” and who “from below” and it seemed to me more successful to arrange the victim “from below”. You also have a talent in the expression of human relations in the form of certain forms, as in a triangle of relationships, which immediately connects and arranges all people in its places.
They gave me a book called “Mathematics for Millions”, written by Lancelot Hogben - it consisted of pages of mathematical analysis of almost everything; geography, movements, angles of the movement of the sun, languages and card games through all kinds of graphs, patterns and formulas. I really liked this book. My son, Eric, found her and gave it to me on my birthday this year.
I looked at her and said: “Lord, she looks like a board that I painted with diagrams! As part of the training of psychiatry, I myself passed two years of psychoanalysis as a client. In the year, many scientists were interested in human behavior and they were attracted by transactical analysis and seminars of Eric Bern. He developed his scientific method.
We wanted to revise old ideas and present something completely new, with a new approach. Bern was a very good leader. He taught us the basics of creating theories in principle. Today I would say that I see a transactic analysis - as a way to cure all humanity faster. To say, we really dreamed of changing the world, and it was our ideas that attracted people to San Francisco in the city Now it’s harder for me to switch back when I read articles that say a more psychoanalytic approach.
His other statement was: “Do not say anything that cannot be set out in the diagrams”, which includes lists, graphs and formulas and diagrams. Everything should be thoroughly accurately and briefly, reducing the ideas for their very foundation, as a mathematical task with the most concise solution. And I continue to work on my charts. After the death of Bern, Claude Steiner said: "If a transactive analysis will exist, then it will exist as a science." I presented my idea to the advice of the trustees who were specially selected for this.
The criteria for presenting the awards were installed in our first journal about transaction analysis. I received it for a triangle of relations, and guingings - for the theory of a new solution and my list of twelve instructions, there were also some other nominees. To be continued….
